Scott Gillenwaters


Commissioner Scott Gillenwaters is serving his second term as County Commission representative from District 6. His district includes Oak Ridge City Hall, Robertsville, Tri County and West Hills precincts.

During his tenure, Commissioner Gillenwaters has served as Parliamentarian for the County Commission.

Scott Gillenwaters has been a resident of Oak Ridge since 1992, having grown up in the Karns Community of West Knox County. He was elected Commissioner in August 2002. He is married with two children.

He has a bachelor of arts degree in secondary education and political science from Emory & Henry College in Emory, Virginia. He began his career as a staff assistant for two members of Congress before entering Christian education full time in 1989. He currently serves as Director of Student Ministries at First United Methodist Church in Oak Ridge. He is also completing graduate work in Youth Ministry Leadership at Huntington University in Indiana.

An active member of the community, Scott is a trained mediator with Tennessee Mediation Services and volunteers with the Victim-Offender Reconciliation Program (VORP) and the Teen Parent Mediation Program (TPM). He is also a member of the Oak Ridge Century Lions Club having served three terms as President.

He has served on the board of directors for CONTACT Hotline Inc. He's been an assistant coach for AYSO soccer as well as a parent volunteer at the Boys Club, Linden Elementary School, Robertsville Middle School and Oak Ridge High School.

Professionally, Scott is a Certified Stewardship Consultant for the United Methodist Church. He has led and assisted in several capital fund and general fund campaigns for churches throughout Holston Conference. He served for 15 years on the Design Team for the Resurrection Youth Event, an annual spiritual enrichment gathering of about 12,000 teens and adults in Gatlinburg. He has written numerous articles for United Methodist publications over the years, and is currently a contributing editor to Youth Ministry Today, a website dedicated to resourcing professional youth leaders. His book, Sage Advice: Stories from Seasoned Youth Workers, was published in May 2003. He also writes periodically for Inside Anderson County, an online news source.
